Do Wine Corks Affect the Quality of Wine

Nowadays winemakers are riven on their considers of how to close wine bottles to hold the freshness and quality intact during transportation and storage. The wine ends up being a hit at the dinner table, if the technique of sealing was successful. If not, the wine will be inedible.

Using synthetic corks are a newer method of sealing wines, but a lot of traditionalists decline to change the time-honored practice of sealing their precious cargo with cork closures.

When corks can be removed easily and the wine is fresh and distinctly flavored, the cork gets an unimportant detail to the wine lover. However if the cork is dry and brittle and the wine has turned to vinegar, the cork becomes the most important item.

Nearly all corks are carved from the bark of oak trees that grow in Portugal and in some other countries around the Mediterranean Sea. The fiber of the cork can be attacked by a fungus that makes the cork to become musty, thus ruining the quality of the wine.

Boiling the cork in water helps to kill the microorganisms in the cork. They’re then flattened out, cut into strips and carven into corks for bottles.

Because synthetic corks are formed from plastic compounds, they are able to reduce the risk of wine contamination. But many winemakers consider that synthetic corks bring a slight chemical look to the wine and also have a disfavor of being hard to remove from the bottle.

Screw on caps for wine bottles are made from aluminium or tin and form a seal that can last much longer than the traditional corks. But some winemakers are disaffected to use screw tops on their high quality wines because wine enthusiasts distinguish that type of seal with cheap wines.

Crown caps are also part of a growing trend to find ways to close wine bottles successfully.

During the fermentation process it has long been used in the sparkling wine market.

But although the crown cap allows a tight seal, the ceremonial aspect involved with opening a bottle of wine is passed.

No one likes to open a bottle of wine at a restaurant or home gathering and find out that it’s turned to vinegar. Each wine enthusiast is frustrated and the winemaker sustains a loss. That’s the reason why wine producers are making wine closures their first priority.
